Elegant Edgings, Pattern Book 189, Coats Clarks

This pattern book, Coats and Clarks 189 is titled Elegant Edgings to Knit, Crochet and Tat.   And, it definitely contains alot of variety; 33 different patterns in all.   There's a few for crochet, a few for tatting and few for knitting.  There are some insertions and example patterns to add them to towels, bed linens, and all those pretties that we add edgings.

I'll come right out and admit, that other than loving these designs, I know nothing about creating them.   So, Mum's the Word, and I'm just showing you the pictures in the book, along with the technique.    Versus showing you how little I know by creating an entire dialog!

The front cover gives a preview of a number of the edgings included.

The back cover gives us the final pattern, a knitted leaf runner.

I'll admit that I've never owned bed linens with edgings, but I image it would make one feel like a Queen!.    A couple of these would be great on clothing and I'd like to have bunches of the leaf edging on the back cover to use as part of holiday decorating ...

This book, vintage 1969, is NOT in the public domain and cannot be processed for the shop.   But, thought I'd share it with you anyway!

Lilly turns Three

I've been meaning to tell you ...  Lilly turned three.    Here she is on her Birthday.

As a couple of you may know, I'm in the pattern business for Lilly.     Originally I started selling a couple patterns as Destash, and then this little one came along.   I knew that she was going to need a College Education when she grew up and thought that a selling patterns would be a good way to fund it.

Most of my profits go to Lilly's 529 Smart Fund and so far she has around $6700.    It was more, but Congress did their little bit of politics two weeks ago and a fair amount was lost.     But, we've got a good number of years to make it up.

Happy Birthday Lilly, Happy Birthday to You !

Vintage Afghan Patterns, Star Book 239

Now, there are some lovely patterns in this book.     There is, of course, a standard Chevron version and a version of the classic Granny Square.  But then, there are a few others I've not seen before (realize that does not mean much !).   This pattern booklet is vintage 1948 from The Spool Cotton Company, who were the publishers for American Thread Company.  This is Star Book 239.      Should you be interested, I'm making the patterns available individually, or the whole book, in PDF format.      Even if you are not interested in the patterns, enjoy the Vintage 1940s Afghan show .....

Embroidered Afghan Crochet pattern

(Footnote:  This pattern was also released by The National Needlecraft Bureau as a leaflet under the same number - 6143).

No 6146 - Ancestral Favorite measures approx. 51 x 72 inches.   It is crocheted with a Plastic Hook No 7 and Red Heart Knitting Worsted.

No 6141 - Petal Drops Afghan graces the back cover.   The lovely piece measures approx. 45 x 70 inches.   It is knitted with 1 pair of No 5 Knitting Pins and Red Heart Knitting Worsted.

This booklet gives us eight crochet and two knitting patterns; 10 in total.  This booklet was issued as a promotion for the Chadwicks Red Heart Knitting Worsted Yarns, which you may have guessed since each pattern calls for it specifically.    I don't know if this yarn is still manufactured (after all, 53 years is quite a long time), however, I'd think you'd be able to locate a suitable equivalent.

I'd have to say that my favorite would be the Rhythms in Cable; it's closest to our dark New Orleans type style we seem to consistently decorate.   But, I don't mind if you happen to like the others more.

I've listed the patterns in my shop, just follow the links under the pictures, should you be interested.  Or, should you not be interested in any of the patterns, I hope that you enjoyed browsing the patterns and will visit again sometime.

Crochet a Petal Doily

This piece, called a Petal Doily, is just a bit different; the stitches are tight, not the typical lacy design, with each little petal and there's alot of them, separate and slightly standing.

Crocheted Round Petal Mat Pattern

Technically a doily, it looks more like a mat and has great potential.   The directions reference that it's made with Metallic Mercerized Thread (color of your choice), but I think it might also look great in one of the tri-color blends.     This pattern comes from the October 1963 issue of The Workbasket.   It's a public domain pattern; you may use and share any way you wish.

(To print, you'll have to click on the pattern to enlarge, copy to a document on your computer and then print)

Star Baby Book 43 Knit Crochet by American Thread Co

The pictures in this book are so sweet that they, over and over again, brought a smile to my face.   I smiled at first glance, I smiled through scanning, and I'm smiling while writing this.   I'm going to venture a guess, that by the time you finish the looking at the pictures, you'll be smiling yourself.

This is Star Baby Book No 43.   It's from American Thread company; all the way back to 1946.   It contains knitting and  crochet patterns, mostly geared for baby and Toddler.   Patterns that require both knitting and crochet are clearly identified.  I'm making most of the patterns available individually, should you be interested.

Even if you are not looking for knitting or crochet patterns, I think you'll enjoy the picture show.    Let's get started.
The front covers gives us 'A Kiss'.   Only downside here is the garment details really are not highlighted.
No 4301 - 2-Piece Suit sized 1 to 1.5 years.   This is knitted with one pair each of Bone Knitting Needles No 1 and 3 and also calls for a Bone Crochet Hook No 2.   The set is short pants and sweater.
No 4302 - Cardigan is sized 1.5 to 2 years.  It is knitted with bone needles No 3.

No 4303 - Crocheted Soakers are created. with a Bone Crochet Hook No 2
No 4304 - Knitted Soakers are stitched with 1 pair Bone Knitting Needles No 6
Okay, so soakers are just functionally cute; but the sketches are delightful.
No 4306 - Toddlers Housecoat sized 1 to 1.5 years.  This pattern is created with both knitting and crochet; calling for 1 pair each Bone Knitting Needles No 1, No 2 and No 4 as well as a Bone Crochet Hook No 2.   You will also need narrow ribbon and 7 pear buttons.

Turn around darling !
No 4307 - Crocheted Baby Set includes the Jacket, Bonnet, Booties, Mittens and a Carriage Cover.  These are created using Bone Crochet Hook No 2 or No 3 and a Steel Crochet Hook No 4 or No 5.

4308 - Surplice Sweater sized for 6 months.   It is knitted with one pair Bone Knitting Needles No 3.  You also need 2 buttons and 2 snap fasteners.

4309 - Smocked Sweater is sized for 1.5 years.  To make this wonderful sweater, you will need one pair each of No 1 and No 3 Bone Knitting Needles and 4 double pointed Knitting Needles No 3.   This also requires a bit of crochet, using a Bone Crochet Hook No 2.
This pattern is available separately.

4310 - Knitted Set sized for babies
Carriage Cover - 1 pair Steel Knitting Needles No 3
Sacque - 1 Pair Bone Knitting Needles No 3
Cap - 1 Pair Knitting Needles No 3 and No 1
Mittens - 1 Pair Bone Knitting Needles No 3

4311 - Legging Suit, Cap and Mittens are sized 6 months to 1 year.  Create this set with 1 par each Bone Knitting Needles No 3 and No 4 and 4 double pointed Bone Knitting Needles No 3 for Mitterns.  You'll also need 9 small buttons.

4312 - Child's Sweater is sized for 2 years.  Make this one up using a Bone Crochet Hook No 2 or No 3

(Don't miss the duck !)
4313 - Puff Stitch Baby Set consists of a Jacket and a Bonnet and Booties.  It is crocheted with a Bone Crochet Hook No 2 or No 3.
4314 - Mr Duck (actual height not stated)  This quacker is made with Bone Crochet Hook No 5 or 6.  Your also need buttons for eyes and, of course, stuffing.

4315 - Infants Knitted Shoulderette.  This wonderful little garment is created with 1 pair each on Bone Knitting Needles No 1 and No 3.

4316 - Puff Stitch Bunting is crocheted with a Bone Crochet Hook No 4.

ARE YOU SMILING ?    I personally love Mr. Duck as well as the bunting and the housecoat.  But, alas, there are no babies in our life and our Son doesn't seem to concerned with the grandbaby requests.     The age of the pattern book stands out with vintage words such as Surplice and Shoulderette.   But, regardless of pattern age, any baby or Toddler would look just as cute as these models.

One of these days, I'll process these designs for the shop.

Which are your smiling favorites ?

Flower Edgings American Thread Star Book 65

Having to display my complete ignorance on a subject is never one of my favorite things to do.   BUT, when it comes the to the contents of this wonderful book, that's just what I'm going to have to do.     This book, Flower Edgings,(also has insertions) is full of delightful and delicate edgings for handkerchiefs, tablecloths, lingerie and such.    My big question as I was looking through the book, was "is this tatting or crochet?" .. since I don't know how to do either one.    When in doubt about this type of thing, I typically goes to the supplies listing where it will say great things like 'Steele Crochet Hook Size J' or tatting shuttle.  This book says things like Needle 13.  So, I'm thinking Tatting.

Since I know little of this work, I'm just going to show you the individual photos, versus commenting on them.   All of the patterns call for Tatting, Crochet or Mercerized Cottons.
