Learn How Crochet Knitting Coats Clarks Book 170b

This is Coats and Clark's Learn How Book, No 170-B, going back to 1959.   This 'Learn How' is far reaching.   It includes crochet, knitting, embroidery and tatting.

It has detailed how-to for the crochet and knitting with lead to beginner patterns that allow you to create a finished piece with the skills just learned.   The tatting is a little less comprehensive, but would be a good refresher.   The embroidery section is basic and is gives instructions to add embroidered effects to a couple of your finished pieces.

So if you are looking for a basic beginner book, you might find this useful.   If you are a beginner looking for some basic starter patterns, you'll find them here.     Here, I'll show you .... (now remember, the time was 1959) ...

Crochet Patterns 

Place Mat - Single and double crochet with a size 10 hook.  The finished mat measures 12.5 x 20

Filet Edging - Applied to a pillowcase.   It uses a No 12 crochet hook.

Doily with Treble Crochet - Created with a No 10 crochet hook.

Shell Stitch Tote Bag.  Dimensions are not given.  You'll need a steel crochet hook no. 1/0

Crochet Afghan - The finished pieces measures 50" x 68".   You'll need an Afghan Hook No 8.

Knot Stitch Sacque - Sized for infants.   It requires a size E crochet hook.

Knitting Patterns

Rib Stitch Hat - Requires knitting needles No 7.

Classic Pullover and Cardigan with Stockinette Stitch - Sized for bust 32.5 - 38.  You'll need 2 sets of knitting needles, No 3 and No 6.

Mittens - Size Medium, created with Double Pointed Needles, Size 3.

Anklets - Size Medium.   You need one set of double pointed needles, size No 2

Boys or Girls Cable Stitch Sweater - Sized 8 - 14.   It's created with one pair each of No 4 and No 6 needles.

Tatting Patterns

Tatted Edges for Napkins and Towels using a Tattle Shuttle.

Tatted Round Doily - This pretty pieces measures 7" in diameter.

Embroidery Patterns

Embroidered Mittens - Here embroidery is added to the Mittens from the knitting section.  Chart is given.

Embroidered Bridge Cloth - chart is given

It's pretty clear what's covered in the lessons by the scope of the patterns.   I enjoyed looking through the booklet.   It's always fun to see what patterns represent the given time period.   One of these days I'll work some of these patterns up for the shop.   When I do, I'll come back and insert some links.

Jack Frost 4716 Free 5 Piece Baby Set

I picked up a crochet book to start evaluating what to do with it ... list in store as is, scan to a PDF file, give to a friend, etc., and out fell a piece of paper referencing pattern 4716.   After a bit of research online (what did we do before Google?) I learned the pattern appears to line up with Pattern 4716 from Jack Frost Baby Book.

Now, this is not a very good picture, however, we a nice little jacket (referred to as a Sacque), a cap, booties and a blanket (referred to as a carriage cover).   

It's obvious that someone sat down at their typewriter and carefully typed out the pattern.   Perhaps the book was their friends.   Perhaps the friend typed it out.   (I sure wish folks would leave notes behind with the real story for other folks ... like me).

But, since one friend was obviously sharing it with another (AND, it's not under copyright), I'd like to share it with you.     (Wish you could sit the striker marks on the paper .... brings back such fond memories of those typewriters in my past).

Again, I cannot attest it to be absolutely correct, however, I'm betting it would be.   (One would certainly check something carefully when copying it out of the book).    If you make it up, I'd appreciate your forwarding a picture so I can replace the very old book image.

American Thread Star Baby Book 148 Knitting Crochet Pattern

BABIES are such fun to dress is Book No 148 from American Thread Company.    And, isn't that a true statement and perfect title.   This booklet does not have a copyright, however, would date to the early 1960s based on the book number and the 25 cent price tag.    Four of the patterns are knitting, one is tatting and the remaining 7 are crochet.  This booklet was issued as a promotion for their Dawn Wool Yarn line.

BABIES are such fun to dress

The front cover contains a whimsical view of babies modeling some of the hat selections contained in the book.

This advertising promo is on the inside front cover.   Since it's also adorable, I wanted to share it with you along with the patterns.

Titled:  A Set for Pet.   It's a knitted cable set sized to 1 year.  You'll need 1 pair of No 1 and 2 Knitting needles and some tiny buttons.   Note the chin strap versus ribbon ties; what a nice variation. 

Titled:  Crochet For Gay, or Kay or Fay.   It is crochet Shell Stitch Baby Set for 6 months.   To create these, you'll need a Plastic Crochet Hook E and a Steel Hook No 7. 

Titled:  Cute for Kate, Smart for Bart.  This crocheted Baby set is sized 6 months to 1 year.   It requires a steel crochet hook 0.

Titled:  Snug as a Hug.  Here we have a Knitted Infants Suit that is sized 1 - 1.5 years.  You'll need one pair each of No 3 and No 1 knitting needles as well as a Plastic Crochet Hook size F for finish details.  

Titled:  Chic for the Sheik:  This crocheted baby set is sized to 1 year and requires 7 little pearl buttons and both a plastic crochet hook size F and a steel crochet hook No 4, and some ribbon.

Titled:  Sailor Dress.   This is one of the larger sized patterns - 3 years.   This piece is crocheted with a steel hook no 7.

Titled:  Tat for Pat.   Infant's Christening Cap & Dress Edging.   Here you are adding the tatting embellishments to an existing dress and cap.   

Titled:  Beauty of Baby.   This is a knitted seed stitch set.   It is sized to 6 months and calls for 1 pair size 3 needles. 

Titled:  His and Hers.   This is the Star Stitch baby set.  It uses an aluminum crochet hook size H, some ribbon.   It is sized 1 year.

 Titled:  Three Cheers.  This is a three pattern set to keep the toddler warm.  The top bottom pattern is crochet, the top designs are knitted.  They are sized for the 2 year old. 

 Titled:  A Cover for Lover and Blanket:  This Shawl  and Blanket Combination - a two pattern set.  The shawl is knitted and the blanket is crocheted.

 Titled:  A Throw for Joe.  This Woven Carriage Cover measures 27 x 37" without the fringe.   It is crocheted with a wooden hook, size 10 and then the harlequin pattern is added using a Weaving Needle.

And, the back cover is the same as the front. 

 I've had a great time looking through this booklet.    I really like all the variations on the booties and the infants suit and the sailor dress are a must have.   Oh ... if only I had a grandchild or knew how to either knit or crochet.  (coming soon, the crocheting).

The New Baby Book, Knitting Crocheting, American Thread, Star Book 53

This is Star Book No 53 from American Thread.   It's titled The New Baby Book, Knitting Crocheting.   Not only does this book have some delightful patterns, the art and presentation are special.     There are 18 pictures here, so if you are on a slower connection, this might take awhile.   It's well worth the wait, however ... if I don't say so myself.   Here we go ....

The New Baby Book

The front and back covers are the same and feature an adorable baby sketch on a whimsical harlequin background.

No 5301, 5302 & 5302 - Baby Booties.  Here we have the standard bootie, along with two pairs sporting open toes.   All three pairs of the booties are crocheted.

5304 - Peter Pan Crocheted Cotton Set -  This little layette in a crocheted set featuring a pullover jacket, cap and booties. 

The official title, on the corresponding page - "Fated to be Dated - Cotton for Her - Wood for Him

5305 - Crocheted Dress is sized 2 to 3

5306 - Boys Suit is knitted and sized 2 - 4 years.   It features the long sleeves pullover sweater, pants (obviously shorts) and, according to the pattern, but not shown in the pictures, suspenders.

 Both are crocheted.  The writing on carrot on the apron bib are freeform embroidery; no chart is given.

So, did you enjoy the sketches surrounding the pattern photos?    I found them delightful.    This booklet is dated 1949, and for the time period, I imagine this would have been the current whimsy.  I enjoyed the use of the 40's vocabulary as well.   You know, soakers for diaper covers and carriage cover for blanket.    I had to include the diagram for the crib sleeper, as if you were like me, I thought it was a blanket from the picture alone.   

I'd say, at least so far, this is my favorite Baby Book from American Thread.
